Is Golf REALLY 90% Mental?

Well, it all depends.  I believe it is a sliding scale based on your current skill level.  On my scale, I feel like golf is 50% mental for 18 handicap golfers, 60% mental for 12 handicap golfers, etc. For scratch golfers it is 90% mental and for Tour players it is 95% mental.

As we build our skill and are able to physically hit the shots, we now must learn the mental skills that unlock us to play as well on a golf course and in a tournament as we do on the range or in a practice round.  I've included a couple of videos below to give you an introduction to golf's mental toughness principles.  Let me know if these help you.

Stay tuned for more Golf Tips from Charlie King.

My take: Both hemispheres of the brain must be switched on in order to maintain any continuity in your golf swing and subsequently your golf game.

The right hemisphere of the brain controls the left side of the body while the left hemisphere controls the right side.

When the left hemisphere of the brain switches off during the golf swing it weakens the right of the body. If you hit a golf ball with a weak right side you are going to pull your shot to the left.

The exact opposite holds true if you switch off the right hemisphere of the brain. I explain this phenomenon in my book "Mastering The Mental Side Of Tournament Golf."

Great stuff. All players need more focus on this element of the game

Not to mention mental mistakes like using the wrong iron from the fairway. You can have all the skill in the world, but if you fail to mentally choose the right club, you are still not going to do well...

You are absolutely correct. When both hemispheres of your brain are switched on during your round you have access to logic, organization and structure(left hemisphere) and creativity, intuition and imagination (right Hemisphere. You just do everything more efficiently from club selection to making a three footer to save par. The only way to keep both hemispheres of your brain switched on is to remain relaxed because that is when the brain functions at maximum capacity.

By the way, golf is 100% mental.

more good advice charlie thank you. i can,t quite see where ernest is coming from surly one part of your brain analises things which club to use etc, and the other side lets you swing the club with out having to think about it andy

Years ago I worked tour players like Billy Mayfair, Danielle Ammaccappane and Peter Jacobsen among others using Hemispheric Kinesiology.

You are correct about the left hemisphere and it analytical capacities, however, the right hemisphere must participate in the selection of the club as well as determining what type of shot to hit, i.e., draw, fade, knockdown.

It is imperative the both hemispheres of a players brain participate in every aspect of his/her golf game in order to perform to the best of their ability. If you go to Youtube and type in Hemispheric Kinesiology you will see how I use muscle testing to determine what the left and right hemispheres of the brain are doing in response to a statement, thought or action.

interesting stuff ernest, your say that the best way is renain relaxed would you agree that medatation or hypnois are good ways to acheave this. you also mention billy mayfair he had a putting stroke all of his but it was one of the best any idea,. on this cheers andy

Meditation and hypnosis helps you relax while you are doing them because your mind is clear from any thoughts that might stress you. At least, that the intention. The problem is you cannot take that mental state with you during your round because your mind is busy dealing with club selection, staying away from water hazards, trying to make that three footer to save par, etc.

I worked with Billy Mayfair a week before the 1990 Tour Championship using HK. Playing against the top 30 players in the world he recorded a second place finish.

I simply gave him a trigger to use during his preshot routine. The intention of the trigger was to keep him relaxed and switch on both hemispheres of his brain during his golf swing.

I created a program called "Mind Mastery For Golf" that is available on my websitewww.hk-relax.com. It contains the DVD "Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life," and a CD with two tracks. One track for tournament players and one for recreational players. The DVD explains how I use muscle testing with HK and why the CD is so effective.

Charlie: I totally agree that the 'mental game' becomes more important once the player has developed the physical skills necessary to hit good shots and compete. But I've also seen high handicappers allow bad thinking to cost them dozens of shots in round, mainly from getting frustrated and allowing that to influence how they carry themselves. But anybody who says golf is 100% mental, I say they're crazy. The human body swings the club and though your mind controls your body, you are also limited by what your body can do. If my hips are too tight to rotate, I might need my mind to help me work on improving that but this is mainly a problem of functional anatomy, not positive thinking.
